Fighting Charges of Hazing in Northeast Ohio

What is Hazing?

Hazing is a form of initiation in which a person or group of people coerce a victim to perform a task that is dangerous and has the potential to cause mental or physical harm. Most commonly associated with colleges and universities, hazing can also occur in military units, gangs, and clubs. Hazing was once considered socially acceptable and even a rite of passage. However, today institutions are increasingly cracking down on hazing behavior, leading to an increase in criminal hazing allegations.

Serious Consequences for Hazing

When an incident of harmless fun or a prank crosses the line to become hazing, there can be lasting consequences. Ohio is one of the few states in the country that has laws against hazing; allowing or participating in hazing is considered a fourth-degree misdemeanor, with convictions resulting in up to 30 days in jail. Defendants may also be subject to expensive civil suits and disciplinary action at school, including suspension or expulsion.
